Meeting starts at 11, we will hook up an hour early to test a bit. Jadwiga Bienkowska Serono Reproductive Biology Institute A Bayesian Approach to Protein Fold Recognition I will describe the fold recognition method that combines two complementary representations of protein structure-the linear structure representation by Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) that encodes individual amino acid preferences and the quadratic structure representation that additionally encodes the potential side chain contacts. The HMM representation employs a fold recognition procedure that sums over all possible sequence-to-model-structure alignments.
This method gives more accurate predictions than fold recognition methods that rely on the optimal alignment and is very fast. Once the most likely fold for a protein sequence is identified, the more detailed structure representation that encodes the potential side chain contacts can be used to find the optimal sequence-to-model-structure alignment.

Roundtable Discussion Freedom to Teach, Freedom to Learn: Information Security as a Sensitive Topic. Moderator, Gene Spafford Some national authorities are increasingly concerned about potential terrorists posing as students so as to study sensitive topics. The recent arrest of a Saudi citizen for alleged terrorist activities while studying for his PhD at one of the NSA\'s Center of Excellence schools is cited by some as justification for these concerns.
