linking with yourselves, the Chairman (Jeff Dozier) probably at UC Santa

Virtual Seminars on Genomics and Bioinformatics
URL: http://www.ndsu.edu/virtual-genomics/seminars.htm
Using the Access Grid and live video streaming technology, the monthly
virtual seminars on genomics and bioinformatics try to promote
discussions and generate an environment for potential collaboration and
a dynamic exchange of ideas. Instead of losing the many potential
person-to-person discussions through the limitations of distance,
virtual seminars can exploit the diversity of researchers' professional
and personal experiences, and give a truly global perspective on the
promises and limitations of the new and growing fields of genomics and
bioinformatics.

Virtual Seminars on Genomics and Bioinformatics

Using the Access Grid and live video streaming technology, the monthly
virtual seminars on genomics and bioinformatics try to promote discussions
and generate an environment for potential collaboration and a dynamic
exchange of ideas. Instead of losing the many potential person-to-person
discussions through the limitations of distance, virtual seminars can
exploit the diversity of researchers' professional and personal
experiences, and give a truly global perspective on the promises and
limitations of the new and growing fields of genomics and bioinformatics.

Meeting starts at 11, we will hook up an hour early to test a bit.
Jadwiga Bienkowska Serono Reproductive Biology Institute A Bayesian Approach to
Protein Fold Recognition I will describe the fold recognition method
that combines two complementary representations of protein structure-the
linear structure representation by Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) that
encodes individual amino acid preferences and the quadratic structure
representation that additionally encodes the potential side chain
contacts. The HMM representation employs a fold recognition procedure
that sums over all possible sequence-to-model-structure alignments.
This method gives more accurate predictions than fold recognition methods
that rely on the optimal alignment and is very fast. Once the most
likely fold for a protein sequence is identified, the more detailed
structure representation that encodes the potential side chain contacts
can be used to find the optimal sequence-to-model-structure alignment.

Roundtable Discussion Freedom to Teach, Freedom to Learn: Information
Security as a Sensitive Topic. Moderator, Gene Spafford Some national
authorities are increasingly concerned about potential terrorists posing
as students so as to study sensitive topics. The recent arrest of a Saudi
citizen for alleged terrorist activities while studying for his PhD at one
of the NSA\'s Center of Excellence schools is cited by some as
justification for these concerns. Meanwhile, scholars are increasingly
concerned about the negative impact such restrictions will have on
academic freedom and our ability to conduct advanced research. Faculty at
some major universities and leaders of scientific societies issued
statements voicing their concerns with new visa and research restrictions.

Keynote Speaker Speaker: Howard Schmidt, Acting Chair, President's
Critical Infrastructure Board, Special Advisor to the President for
Cyberspace Security (Acting) Securing our critical infrastructures
includes protecting our computing and communications enterprises.
Recently, the White House released a report recommending strategy to
protect these enterprises. Building on input provided by experts in
government, industry, and academia, the report discusses 5 priorities for
action. In this talk, Mr. Schmidt will discuss the report, needed steps to
carry out the recommendations, and some of the initial results obtained
since the release of the report. In particular, Mr. Schmidt will discuss
some of the role of academic centers of expertise, such as CERIAS at
Purdue, can play in these critical tasks.
