MCS Undergraduate Program in Computational Science

See projects 146-190 of the DEP catalogue for current MCS research opportunities.

The Program Undergraduate programs are conducted for students majoring in computer science or a related discipline. Programs are available for the summer as well as fall and spring semesters. Salary will be in the range of $13.00 to $17.00 per hour, depending on education level and experience. Housing accommodations and round-trip travel are included.

Note: Students who apply for summer program participation must also submit an application to the DOE  Laboratory Internships Program (SULI) (see the Web site for the necessary form).

Research Areas The division's computing environment, consisting of nearly 2,000 different computers, is based on a network of diverse  workstations including Linux, Windows, and PCs for administrative and database purposes, portable computing devices (laptops); home computing devices; and local area network communications gear. We also operate three large Linux clusters for high-end computational science and computer science research. For further information about the MCS Division, see http://www.mcs.anl.gov.

Student opportunities are available in the following research areas:

  • Numerical  Methods - ODEs, nonlinear PDEs, optimization, nonlinear differential equations, linear algebra, automatic differentiation
  • Parallel Tools - MPI-2 advanced communication, PVFS2, integrated applications, development environments, parallel I/O
  • Applied Mathematics - computational fluid dynamics, micromagnetics
  • Logic-Based Systems -   automated reasoning
  • Scientific Visualization and Collaborative Environments  - performance visualization of supercomputer applications,   shared workspaces, large-scale tiled display, collaborative tools
  • Distributed Computing - advanced networking technologies, resource management, scheduling, computer security, distributed I/O
  • Computational Science - climate modeling, systems biology and bioinformatics
  • Systems Administration - networking, programming, performance management
  • Application Materials Candidates interested in the program should complete an application and submit it online.
