Search for the Origins of Pacific Decadal Variability
| Abstract | Various aspects of Pacific decadal variability are studied in
a coupled ocean-atmosphere GCM (FOAM) using modeling surgery sensitivity experiments. It is found that both the North
Pacific decadal variability and tropical Pacific decadal variability can originate from the local coupled ocean-atmosphere system. In the mean time, these variability modes can be enhanced significantly by remote climate variability through atmospheric and oceanic teleconnections. It is also found that the memory of the tropical Pacific decadal variability may originate from higher baroclinic oceanic wave modes. Finally, the feedback of mid-latitude ocean-atmosphere is studied and is found to play an important role in determining the atmospheric response to North Pacific SST variability. |
