Although it has been relatively neglected and underestimated for
historical and sociological reasons, we argue that the problem of defining
and creating software environments is both essential to grid computing and
one of the one or two main factors which currently limit the growth of
grids. We discuss how this problem can be formulated, describe software
which provides a solution and talk about how this might evolve into a
basic element of future grid infrastructure.
