Overview
A DOE Workshop on Multiscale Mathematics in Modeling and
Simulation will be held May 3-5, 2004 at the Sheraton Pentagon South Hotel in
Alexandria, Virginia.
Problems with many different and strongly coupled scales are ubiquitous in
science and engineering, and pose a major challenge to computation. Such
problems cannot at present be effectively solved on the computer. More
importantly, the problem of how to couple these time- and length-scales in a way
that faithfully represents the underlying physics is not yet fully understood.
DOE’s Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) is embarking on
the development of a roadmap for future investments in multiscale mathematics to
address these challenges. The purpose of this workshop will be to explore the
multiscale challenges in a number of areas, identify common themes and potential
impacts, and to assist ASCR by writing a report which can be used in developing
the roadmap.
