Opportunites at the Optimization Technology Center

The Optimization Technology Center holds oppportunities for those in academia as well as in industry.

Educational Programs

The Optimization Technology Center welcomes participation of students at all levels. Students may be supervised jointly by principals at both institutions and may spend time at both locations.

Graduate Students

Center-supported graduate students develop and analyze new optimization algorithms for the NEOS library, work on important application areas, and help to build the NEOS server and guide. Graduate students are supported by research assistantships and fellowships at Northwestern and appointments at Argonne. Students interested in working on a master's or a PhD degree in optimization or in any aspect of its network-enabled technologies may apply to either of the two departments at Northwestern: Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences or Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students integrate optimization software into modeling environments, develop the NEOS presence on the World Wide Web, and help with other aspects to the NEOS server and guide. Undergraduates are supported by cooperative appointments at both Northwestern and Argonne and through science and engineering research semester appointments at Argonne.

The center also offers postdoctoral fellowships, which are advertised on the Internet and in professional publications.

For more information about studies at Northwestern University and Argone National Laboratory, please contact Jorge Nocedal (EECS Department, Northwestern) or Steve Wright (MCS Division, Argonne).

Industrial Participation

The center welcomes participants in industry and government laboratories. Their interests might include applications of optimization, algorithm develpment, and the role of expert systems in the NEOS server and guide. Corporations and businesses may become participants in the OTC though an annual membership fee. (Members of Northwestern's Tech Corporate Partners program receive a discount.) Benefits to participants include:
