Argonne National Laboratory
Building 221, Room A-261
October 8-9, 1998

Goals

The goal of this meeting is to:

    1. collect the most recent information about the status of current projects accessing remote resources,
    2. derive a strategy on how remote access to resources can be supported, and
    3. bring the research community in this area together to initiate dialog and collaboration.

We like to emphasize that this is a working meeting. We are looking for participants, who can contribute to a potential solution. Thus, focus of the   meeting are working groups to develop actively solutions to the problems stated.

We would like to collect a minimal set of requirements that should be supported in order to make such remote access possible and useful from Java. We would like to design a simple architecture and provide a set of classes enabling access to remote compute resources and data services. Such a set of classes should be reusable by a variety of project groups. Guidelines to derive a first prototype should be set. The development of a Java Framework can also be applied to facilitate the use of CORBA and to derive, for example, a C++ library.

We list the following issues, which we would like to address in the workshop and follow-up discussions. The list is not intended to be a complete classification, but to remind us of some important issues:

  1. Properties of a computer and data resources
  2. Information discovery
  3. Interfaces
  1. Security and authentication
  2. Job submission (including compilation, execution, and cancellation)
  3. Access to data servers
  4. Information discovery for users
  5. Client side tool interfaces
  6. Debuggers, performance visualization, collaboration, visualization in general
  1. Compute resources
  2. Who uses it?
  3. Accounting
  4. Scheduling Policies
  5. Reservation
  6. Interpretation of history related data
  1. Operating System? NT, Unix, etc.
  2. Compilers and Libraries
  3.     C/C++ compiler
        Java language
        Class, Jar, and Zip file

  4. Dynamic properties
  5. Libraries
        Which security library?

Please send comments and suggestions to gregor@mcs.anl.gov.

Driving Directions to ANL from airports

Argonne National Laboratory is located about 25 miles southwest of Chicago. On-site and Chicago area maps are available via http://www.anl.gov/OPA/anlil.html.

For those who will drive from O'Hare airport to Budgetel, Best Western, the Holiday Inn or Argonne, leave the airport taking the airport expressway towards Chicago. From this expressway, turn south on Interstate 294 (I-294), following the signposts to Indiana. Travel south on I-294 for approximately 13 miles to Interstate 55 (I-55). Turn onto I-55south, following the signs to St. Louis. (I-55 is traveling mostly west at this point.) For Best Western continue on I-55 for approximately 2 miles to County Line Road taking the south exit. Turn right onto Frontage Road and the Inn will be directly on your left. For the Holiday Inn, Budgetel and Red Roof Inn continue approximately 3 miles to Illinois Route 83 (Kingery Highway), taking the north exit. Budgetel will be on your right hand side as you exit I-55. Continue north a short distance for the Holiday Inn and the Red Roof Inn; The Holiday Inn is on the right side on Frontage road. To get to Frontage road, turn right at the first traffic light on Rte. 83 and then right again. The Red Roof Inn is approximately a half mile further north on Rte. 83.

To drive to Argonne, return to I-55 South (which is traveling mainly west) by driving south on Rte. 83. Take the south exit off I-55 for Cass Ave., and travel south on Cass Ave. to Northgate Road. Turn right and head towards the Main Gate (if you are a U.S. citizen, proceed through the gate and tell the guard you are visiting bldg. 221 - if you are a non-U.S. citizen, stop at the Argonne Information Center to the right of the Main Gate).

For those arriving at Midway airport, drive north to I-55 and then take I-55 south to County Line Road, Rte. 83 or Cass Ave. as above.

As you pass through the guard post, turn right and follow to the stop sign. Turn right again. Building 221 is located at the corner of the next stop sign.
